WAIS fencing athlete Suntherlan Scudds has recently competed in the FIE World Cup event in Thailand, finishing eighth in an Australian record performance.
Scudds performed well progressing through a field of 44 competitors into the final group of eight, in an effort that has seen the 19 year-old break into the world's top 100 international rankings for the first time.
"I fenced okay in the pool group winning three of my five contests, but I lost one I should have gained, Scudds said.
"In the next round I defeated Venezuelan Olympian Hernan Jansen to make the last 16.
Scudds then disposed of Kazakhstani Andrey Balabayev 15-10 to advance to the last eight, where his run was ended.
"I fenced the American number two and ranked22nd in the world,Ben Igoe in the Quater finals, Scudds said. "I was winning 8-6 at the break, before his coach changed his tactics. The score evened to 12-12 where three poor mistakes lead to me losing 15-12.
Scudds became the first Australian sabre competitor to make a World Cup quarter final and has also been the first Australian in 40 years to gain a men's sabre world ranking inside the top 100, with his current position standing at 94.
