Western Australia’s elite sailing athletes are in firm medal round contention nearing the halfway point of the World Championship Test Event in Aarhus, Denmark.

Matt Wearn currently holds second position in the laser fleet, trailing compatriot and reigning Olympic champion Tom Burton by two points. The duo appear set to fight out gold medal bragging rights, however New Zealander Thomas Saunders is also within striking distance in third.

Carrie Smith and her crew Jaime Ryan are in sixth position in the women’s 470 class, currently holding 13 points. A Swiss crew currently leads, ahead of boats from Germany and Poland.

David Gilmour and his crew Joel Turner similarly hold a sixth position ranking in the 49er class, with Gilmour’s younger brother Lachy Gilmour, sailing with crew Ryan Donaldson further back in 13th.

Australians Will and Sam Phillips currently lead the fleet on five points.

In the 49erFX fleet, Caitlin Elks and Hayley Clark sit in 14th position, but will face a challenge to bridge the 24 point deficit to 10th place and a position in the medal race.

Elyse Ainsworth also faces a tough battle to qualify for the medal round, with the first year senior ranked 17th in the laser radial class.
