Athlete in Focus: Jess Lai

It's no secret that the sport of weighlifting is not followed as closely as some of the other sports WAIS athletes participate in. Nonetheless the level of dedication to training and competing does not change. In this week's 'Athlete in Focus' installment we've caught up with Jess Lai to gain an insight into what life is like being a weightlifter at the elite level.

  • What made you want to start participating in your sport?
The 2014 Commonwealth Games.
 
  • What is your favourite kind of training session and why?
 
Heavy sessions! Because I like lifting heavy things.
 
  • What is your biggest sporting achievement to date?
 
2018 Australian team trials. I opened on a PB snatch and finished with a 5kg PB total.
 
  • What is your ultimate sporting goal?
 
To compete at the Olympics.
 
  • What is your biggest non-sporting achievement to date?
 
Getting through third year physio!
 
  • Nutrition is obviously a big part of being an athlete. What is your favourite meal to cook/eat?
 
Roast meat and veggies.
