Athletics
The WAIS Athletics Program is a squad-based program and centres on the identification, development, and preparation for international competition, of talented athletes whom it is believed can progress to the national representative level.

Athletes are categorised according to their event with the programs and progress of those who have been nationally identified by National Event Coaches in conjunction with the State Event Group Coordinator or WAIS coach.

Squad Structure
There are two squads within the WAIS Track and Field program:
  • Elite squad
  • Development squad
Athletes who achieve the qualifying standard in the previous financial year period, qualify for membership of the squad in the current financial year. They are eligible for support from the squad budget as well as support from their own individual scholarship account.

Athletes who did not achieve the qualifying standard in the previous financial year, but achieve it in the current financial year are eligible for immediate assistance from the squad budget. They can apply for an individual scholarship for the next financial year.

Athletes who achieve a World Youth Qualifier, but who have not achieved the qualifying standard for an individual scholarship are eligible for membership of the Development Squad.

Staff
The program is staffed by two full-time Head Coaches, with separate responsibilities for Track and Field, a full-time Senior Coach and a Development Coach.

In addition, there are six part-time event group co-ordinators whose primary role is to coach their squad of athletes and to liaise with the appropriate National Event and WAIS Coaches.
