Hockey (Men)
The NTC WAIS Men’s Hockey Program caters for the development and support of WA athletes currently or identified as capable of progressing to the highest representative levels of their sport. The Program provides world-class coaching, training, facilities and support services to improve athlete competitive performance.

Objectives
  • Maximise WA representation on National teams
  • Maximise the WA contribution to Australian world-class performances
Program Categories
The Program consists of the following squads to be selected in October of each year:
  • Elite Training Squad - This squad is formed so that the development and preparation programs for athletes either in, or close to senior national squad/team selection can be rationalized and implemented.
  • Development Training Squad - This squad is formed so that a development and preparation program can be implemented for those athletes identified as potential future elite athletes but are currently not considered close to national team selection.
  • Preparatory Training Squad - This squad is formed so that athletes can train within the WAIS environment for a variety of, normally, short term objectives such as talent assessment or to provide short term support to other athletes in the Program. Preparatory Squad members will not be eligible for the same squad member benefits as full WAIS squad members. Preparatory squad athletes will be eligible to attend training sessions as determined by the Head Coach but not be eligible for other WAIS services or benefits. Athletes selected as Preparatory Squad members must show clear progression and improvement in their abilities. After this time, if they have not progressed to the WAIS Development squad level, they will not be eligible for re-selection to the Preparatory squad.

Size of Squads
Squad size is dependent on the quality of athletes and the total number of squad memberships available. The maximum number of WAIS squad memberships offered for 2006/07 is 20 athletes (+maximum 5 Preparatory athletes). WAIS reserves the right to offer up to but not exceeding this maximum total.

Timeframe
Athlete squad memberships will commence on 1st October concluding on the 30th September annually.

Selection Process
A Selection Panel consisting of the WAIS Program Manager, NTC WAIS Head Coach, or Elite Coaching Panel, the National Coach (or nominee) and a nominee from the State Sporting Organisation will propose athlete names to the WAIS Executive Director for endorsement. Once approved, athletes will be offered Program memberships. Membership to the Program is not confirmed until the athlete has signed the WAIS Athlete Agreement.
