The WAIS Men’s Water Polo Program is a squad-based program and centres on the development, and preparation for international competition, of identified talented players whom it is believed can progress to the national representative level.
Squad Structure The squad consists of approximately 20 athletes and is divided into three core groups.
- Senior Group - Comprises athletes who have the potential to play for the National Senior Team and includes current national team members. Selection of athletes in this group is done in consultation with the National Head Coach. This group’s training plan is related to international competitions and the National Men’s Waterpolo League.
- Under 20 (Junior) Group - Comprises athletes who have the potential to play in the National Junior Team. The National Junior Coach is consulted on the selection of athletes into this group. Their training plan is linked to international junior competitions, the National Men’s Waterpolo League and the Under 20 and Under 17 National Championships.
- Under 17 (Youth) Group - The best and most talented athletes from the TID Program make up this group. The WAIS Head and Assistant Coaches select them. Their training program focuses on the Under 20 and Under 17 National Championships and the State League.
The underpinning programs are the responsibility of WAWPI. These programs are predominantly developmental in nature and feed into the state underage representative teams.
Staff The program is staffed by one full-time Head Coach.
