WAIS has its own state of the art administration and sport science facility adjacent to Challenge Stadium in the Perth suburb of Mount Claremont. The facilities, including sport science laboratories and a strength training facility, are housed over three floors, so that WAIS can provide centralised, on-site resources to all athletes across a variety of disciplines.
Challenge Stadium has training and competition facilities for more than 20 sports and many of WAIS’s athletes use it as their primary training venue.
The Lower Ground Floor The lower ground floor is the domain of the athletes and hosts a huge state of the art strength and conditioning facility. Administration staff are allowed to use the gym, but staff usually prefer not to be shown up by the superior performances of the athletes!
Unlike a conventional public gym or fitness centre, there is a noticeable absence of aerobic equipment such as running machines, steppers and bikes. These are reserved as warm-up tools only with the focus being purely on strength and power. Each athlete is given a tailor-made program to gain maximum improvement in his or her sport.
The Ground Floor The Ground floor has several components with the reception area as the central ‘hub’ of the building. Behind the reception desk are the sport science staff offices housing the biomechanist, the physiologists, psychologists, the Talent Search Officer and others.
Male and female changing rooms are on this level, as is the sport science testing laboratories. A measuring room exists for assessing skin folds, weight and height. A specially equipped room is used to acclimate athletes for overseas competitions, where climate conditions can be adjusted to simulate different weather conditions such as hot and humid. The dominant room is a huge testing lab with equipment for testing athletes’ fitness and endurance. This laboratory is equipped with rowing machines, running machines, cycles and other specialist equipment – much of it designed and built at WAIS.
The First Floor The upper floor is mainly office space where all senior and administration staff, including the Director, have their offices. Consultation rooms are also available for the nutritionist, psychologists, and other visiting practitioners to use on a flexible basis. There is also a meeting room reserved for squad meetings where coaches can play back videos or talk through programs to a certain squad of athletes.
Coaches are located in semi-open plan ‘cubicle’ areas arranged by sport A small meeting room located in the centre of the floor offers a central meeting place to host visitors, office meetings etc.
Athletes occasionally visit this floor to speak to a coach after using the gym, or when confirming travel arrangements with a Program Secretary.
Access The WAIS facility is located adjacent to Challenge Stadium – a huge leisure centre housing international swimming competition facilities and a court for team-sport competitions. WAIS benefits from use of the facility – in particular, car parking, the café, the gymnastics gymnasium and the swimming facilities regularly used for Waterpolo, swimming, and triathlon training.
There is an entrance to WAIS on the first level from the foyer of Challenge Stadium to allow WAIS staff to access the Stadium without venturing outside.
