The 420 class State Championships were held last weekend at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club with a strong number of fleets making for great racing.

The championship was raced over an eight race series across Saturday and Sunday, with 18 crews making up a highly competitive field.

There were newcomers to the fleet, with Jayden Dalton joining from the Optimist Class, with Seamus Mulholland Patterson crewing to fast track their way to the front pack.

Richard Maher, Conor Nicholas, Alistair Young, Chris Charlwood, Ryan Donaldson and Lachy Gilham all from the Laser class, came across to enjoy some higher speed sailing.

The two competing WAIS crews enjoyed a great battle at the front of the fleet, with Nia Jerwood and Lisa Smith finishing on equal points with the WAIS boys squad of Emerson Carlberg and Lachy Gilmour.

The stronger winds in the last two races saw Carlberg and Gilmour flying down the reaches to claim both race wins, and subsequently take the State title on countback.

WAIS head coach Belinda Stowell said the weekend racing had been an enjoyable experience for all concerned.

“It was a great weekend with the prize ceremony staged on the green lawns of the club, and the President of the 420 Association, Peter Gilmour ensured the ceremony showcased a high level event,” Stowell said.
