420 Sailors in Action both Home and Abroad

WAIS Sailing head coach Belinda Stowell has over seen a busy period of action for the WAIS squad recently, with a trip to Japan for a Youth Sailing Regatta followed closer to home by the Mandurah Easter Regatta.

Travelling with Stowell to Japan were 420 class scholarship holders Ella Clark, Carrie Smith, Thomas Blaauw and Lachy Gilmour.

In a mixed fleet event, which was also hosting Japanese Youth team selections, Clark and Smith produced an excellent series, to claim second place overall. Conditions were a bit tougher for Blaauw and Gilmour, with the pair tackling a bout of illness as well as cold conditions in Wakayama.

Back in more familiar surroundings, Clark and Smith again impressed in the 420 ranks, taking out the 2013 Mandurah Easter Regatta title.

With plenty of WAIS athletes on water, Belinda Stowell gave a run down of the other notable performances:

Laser sailors:

Mark Spearmancontinues to prepare for his Youth World Championships in July, racing World Champion Tristan Brown in the Mandurah Easter Regatta. Brown won the regatta but not without a fight from Spearman, who will travel to contest the European Youth Championships in Croatia in preparation for the Youth Worlds.

Luke Elliot won the Laser Standard class in Mandurah and leaves next week to join fellow WAIS athlete Matthew Wearn in Hyeres, France in late April for the fourth World Cup event for 2013.

49er FX:

The 49er FX girls have been training hard and following a training camp with Emmett Lazich, the Gold Medallist coach in the 49ers, competed in their state championships with Tessa Parkinson and Kate Lathouras taking out the title.
