A bronze medal to Scott Sunderland highlighted day one activity from the 2014 Track Cycling Championships in Adelaide.

Had it not been for a handle bar issue, it might have been ever better for Sunderland, who just a week ago became the first Australian to break the one minute barrier in the men’s 1000m time trial.

On this occasion however, a loose handlebar led to early rhythm problems – with Sunderland posting a time of 1.03.176min for third place, behind national champion Matthew Glaetzer (SA) and Scott Law (NSW).

In the women’s team sprint, WAIS pair Tian Beckett and Elisa Wundersitz combined well to record a fourth place finish after being edged by Taylah Jennings and Tenille Falappi in the bronze medal final. Gold went Steph Morton and Rikki Belder ahead of Caitlin Ward and Deanna Bax.

In the junior competition, there was a bronze medal for WAIS athlete Sam Welsford, who claimed third place in the men’s 3km Individual Pursuit. There were also personal best times for Reece Tucknott (ninth), Michael Storer (12th) and Matt Jackson (14th).

In the morning session of day two action, 2012 London Olympian Mel Hoskins qualified for the bronze medal ride of the women’s Individual Pursuit and will ride for a medal against Ashlee Ankudinoff.
