Luke Durbridge scored an impressive road win in Tasmania

WAIS-AIS cyclist Luke Durbridge scored an impressive road victory in the recent Tour of Mersey in Tasmania, putting behind him the disappointment of narrowly missing out on selection for Worlds.

Durbridge’s was the last name cut from Australia’s medal topping track team that dominated the recent World Championships in Denmark.

Competing in the three stage national road series event, Durbridge showed his pedigree by dominating the opening time-trial before showing considerable tactical nous to hold on to a two second advantage in the following road races.

WAIS head cycling coach Darryl Benson said his efforts in a quality field were made even more impressive given his limited team support.

“Luke rode an incredible time-trial to set up the win, but he had to dig deep in the road races, as teams were trying to work against him,” Benson said. “He was able to get some assistance from the WA guys in Plan B and hold on for a stunning win.”

Benson added that Durbridge’s success so soon after the disappointment of missing out on the world champs was indicative of his focus.

“He took the news really well. He was able to channel that into positive performance and he will be all the better for that. His time will definitely come.”

“He let the coaches know that his focus is well on track for the 2010 World Road Championships (to be held in Geelong from September 29 – October 3).”

Young WAIS cyclist Jessica Allen showed a glimpse of her future potential by competing in the women’s event in Tasmania. Riding in the senior ranks, Allen was the highest ranked of the U19 cyclists, strengthening her credentials for a spot in Australia’s Junior Road World Championships squad which will be held in Italy this August.

Fellow WAIS cyclist Melissa Hoskins competed in an International keirin competition in Japan where she impressively captured second place.

WAIS cyclists Bella King and Michaela Anderson will soon head to Adelaide for a two week track endurance camp whilst sprint cyclist Holly Williams – who made a big impression at this year’s national champs – is heading for sprint camp in Sydney. All three athletes will head for a second camp in Adelaide in July.
