WAIS-AIS world champion cyclist Cameron Meyer has underlined his emphatic reign over these Commonwealth Games with a commanding win in the men’s 20km scratch race.

In a fantastic result for WAIS, silver was won by another WAIS-AIS athlete, cyclist Michael Freiberg. But it was Meyer who claimed the accolades after producing another devastating turn of speed to take a lap on the field solo, a move the was able to lock up Meyer’s third gold medal of the Delhi Games.

With Meyer and Freiberg joined in the starting field alongside fellow Australian Jack Bobridge, the green and gold was prominent in the early stages of the race. But when no-one could match Meyer’s burst it became a race for second, with Meyer turning his attentions to helping his teammates.

It was Freiberg who benefitted as Meyer headed for the finish line, he lead out superbly for Freiberg who rode off his wheel to take silver ahead of Canada’s Zach Bell.

The scratch race success, added to the gold Meyer won earlier in the meet in both the men’s points race – an event he is current world champion in – and also as a member of the men’s team pursuit, which defeated New Zealand in the final a day earlier.

New Zealand’s Marc Ryan and Scotland’s Evan Oliphant rounded out the top five.
