Cam Meyer will be looking to add Commonwealth gold to his world championship collection

Western Australian Institute of Sport cyclist Cameron Meyer has qualified with ease for tonight’s 40km Points Race final at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Meyer – a dual world champion in the event – will be joined in the gold medal race by another WAIS-AIS rider, Luke Durbridge who was a late replacement for Meyer’s brother Travis, who withdrew for personal reasons in the week leading up to the Delhi Games.

Cameron Meyer earned ten points in the 15km qualification ride, picking up points in three of the six sprint events and effortlessly chasing down the one attempted breakaway.

Durbridge – who last week won silver at the U23 Road World Championships in Geelong – raced in the second heat, and qualified after winning the third sprint to collect five points.

Durbridge will be given the assignment of riding for Cameron Meyer in tonight’s gold medal race and covering breakaways.

Also in action today will be Josie Tomic – a current world champion in the women’s teams pursuit (non Commonwealth Games event). The women’s event didn’t require any qualification and Tomic will be joined by fellow Australians Megan Dunn and Belinda Goss. Australia is heavily tipped for medals in both the men’s and women’s events.
