WA has one athlete in the Australian boxing squad. Jordan Samardali will be looking to make a name for himself in Glasgow

With 13 weight categories providing 13 gold medals, Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games Boxing events will be held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, with the medal bouts scheduled for the Hydro complex, modelled on ancient Greek and Roman amphitheatres.

The sport coined “the sweet science” is offering medals for female athletes for the first time at Commonwealth level, ensuring that the Glasgow boxing program is likely to attract a high level of interest across the stretch of the Glasgow Games schedule.

WA has one pugilist in Australia’s squad, with Jordan Samardali set to contest the men’s light heavyweight (81+kg) class.

Samardali has dedicated his Glasgow campaign to his older brother, whose own promising boxing career was curtailed after he fell into a coma following injuries sustained from an attack outside a Perth nightspot. Although he recovered, he was unable to continue boxing.

Should Samardali navigate his path to the Commonwealth Games medal round, the bouts are scheduled for Saturday August 2, with the action commencing from 2.00am Perth time (Aug 3).

Historically, Australian boxers have not excelled in the Commonwealth ring, with fighters from England, Canada and Scotland regularly on the medal dais.
