Western Australian swimmers Jessica Pengelly and Sally Hunter have qualified from their morning heats on Day one of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Pengelly swam a 4:42.49min in the women’s 400m IM to advance to final set for a 2.07am start-time on July 25 Perth time.

There can be no disputing that local hero Hannah Miley is favourite for gold, having clocked the fastest time in qualifying, with a very impressive 4.38:27, more than a second clear of second fastest qualifier Emily Overholt of Canada.

Miley will be cheered on by a parochial home-crowd, but Pengelly, if she can replicate her heat form, can threaten a podium finish.

Sally Hunter, the oldest member of the Australian swimming team, eased her way through to the semi final stage of the women’s 50m breaststroke, after finishing second in her heat in a time of 31.13sec. The semi finals will be contested held from 3.00am Perth time, July 25.

A top eight time will qualify Hunter for the Day two final, set for a 2.12am start time on July 26 Perth time.

Hunter is also scheduled to contest the women’s 100m and 200m breaststroke events.
