WA sailors Nia Jerwood and Monique De Vries have claimed a silver medal at the Junior 470 World Championships in Enoshima, Japan.

The Fremantle Sailing Club pair were only five points adrift of a gold – which went to a Spanish duo with an Italian crew claiming bronze.

Jerwood and De Vries returned a consistent campaign, with only one race result outside of the top 10, whilst their scorecard was also embossed by five podium performances that included two race wins.

There was also an encouraging 16th place finish for WA sailor Orla Mulholland-Patterson who crewed for Sophie McIntosh. The boat recorded three top 10 finishes with a fourth place effort in race nine highlighting their week.

In men’s racing, WA’s Chris Charlwood and Josh Dawson recorded a 10th place finish after earning a berth in the medal race.

The pair experienced mixed fortunes with some very competitive results, tempered by a black flag disqualification that saw them forced to post a 21st race effort in the sixth race.

In Portugal, WA had competitors in action at the 49er and 49erFX World Championships.

David Gilmour and Joel Turner combined for a 14th position effort in the men’s 49er, whilst Lachy Gilmour and Ryan Donaldson finished further back in 31st.

There was also a 31st position effort from Caitlin Elks and Hayley Clark in the women’s 49erFX class. Ella Clark, crewing for Amelia Stabback – finished in 53rd position overall.

Australian Sailing Team member Matt Wearn is preparing to launch his campaign at the Laser World Championships in Croatia starting later in September.
