Liz Parnov Receives Roll-Down Selection for IAAF World Championships

Liz Parnov has received a call-up to compete at the IAAF World Championships in London after Athletics Australia confirmed a further 14 roll-down spots, bringing the total Australian Flame team to 62 athletes.

Having successfully returned to full-training after her Olympic selection hopes were last year cruelled by a broken leg suffered in a training accident, Parnov is now line to make her world championships debut adding to her existing Olympic (London2012) and Commonwealth Games (Delhi2010, Glasgow2014) representative honours.

The roll-down spots were awarded at the discretion of national selectors and afforded to athletes in events were the full quota of IAAF Championship spots had not been filled. In these instances, the next best ranked athletes (based on season performance) are eligible through a roll-down process until the quota positions are exhausted.

In Parnov’s case, she jumped a new personal best of 4.51m in Perth last March that neared the A-Qualifying mark of 4.55m for women’s pole vault. Just this week, Parnov showed promise by clearing 4.41m at a competition meet in Belgium for third place.

The 23 year-old’s selection comes after the disappointment this week for training partner Nina Kennedy, who withdrew from the national team due to a quad injury.

Parnov was joined in roll-down selection on the Australian team by fellow Olympians; Michelle Jenneke (100m hurdles), Victoria Mitchell (3000m steeplechase) and Benn Harradine (discus).

Competition at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park begins on August 4 and runs through to August 13.
