WAIS scholarship holders Matt Ramsden and Kurtis Marschall have been selected in the largest ever Australian team to contest a World Athletics Indoors Championships.

2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Kurtis Marschall will line up in the pole vault and Ramsden after narrowly missing Olympic selection a year ago will contest the 3000m

After finishing fourth at the 2018 Championships in Birmingham, Marschall will be hoping to find the podium after a run of strong results over the last month. In his first two competitions in Europe, he jumped 5.71 before adding a 5.66 and a 5.76 last weekend in Paris.

The indoor World Championships will be the first time in three years that Ramsden has pulled on the green and gold, having missed Olympic selection despite running the qualifying time. With the 3000m in his own words his best event he is looking to build for the year ahead that will also including a Commonwealth Games and Outdoor World Championships.

“We’ve had some great success at these championships over the years, with 21 medals won, including seven gold, and we’re looking forward to seeing how this group of athletes fare against some of the best in the world, in what is a very different setting to the competition we host domestically, said Athletics Australia General Manager, Andrew Faichney.

“This team is one that has a real mix of youth and experience. Most of these athletes made their Olympic debut last year in Tokyo and many have spent the last few months putting their learnings from last year into practice throughout the World Indoor Tour season. There’s much to look forward to next weekend, and we know our athletes will do us all proud.”

Pole vaulter Nina Kennedy was also selected, however has withdrawn due to injury.
