Western Australian Institute of Sport javelin thrower Kim Mickle has closed her 2014 competition season with a fourth place finish at the Continental Cup in Marrakech with a best throw of 61.33m.

Whilst a podium finish had been the goal, 2014 will undeniably go down as a huge success for Mickle, in a campaign that has seen the 29 year-old break the Australian national record (66.83m) and win gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Mickle headed into competition in Morocco off a limited preparation, after hurting her right foot in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games. The injury required the 2013 WAIS Athlete of the Year to have her foot in a moon boot on her return to Perth from Scotland in August.

The Continental Cup is held every four years and pits athletes from around the world into four continental sub categories, with Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asian Pacific all competing as teams.

Mickle made her second appearance at Continental Cup level and finished in fourth place after returning a best mark of 61.33m.

Reigning Olympic champion Barbora Spotakova won the women’s javelin with a throw of 65.52m, whilst Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sunette Viljoen again took second place with 63.76m. Third place went to 25 year-old Canadian Liz Gleadle (61.38m).
