WAIS javelin thrower Kim Mickle has set her sights on Diamond League gold as the best preparation for Commonwealth Games glory when she makes her 2014 international bow in Doha tomorrow.

The Australian national record holder and nine-time domestic champion pointed to a thoroughly consistent 2013 season as an indicator of her form, but added that one crucial step was missing.

“My goal this year is to be Commonwealth champion but I also want to see what I can do against the best in the world at the Diamond League. Last year I finished on the podium at every single event but failed to get on the top of the dais, so hopefully I can nab a few first places this year,” she said.

“The Diamond League is extraordinary. I managed to do most events last year and they are an amazing build up to any major championship.”

Having qualified for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow by virtue of her numerous A-qualifiers and March National title win, Mickle is aiming to continue an encouraging pattern trend that saw her place fourth at the 2006 Melbourne Games and second at the 2010 Delhi Games.

Before she can think about Commonwealth glory however, she has a number of Diamond League meets to entertain first.

“To compete against the best in the world each month at every Diamond League event is great. My plan is definitely to win each event, so game on.”

The Doha Diamond League will also feature former WAIS pole vaulter Alana Boyd.
