WAIS cycling scholarship holder Brad Lindfield, has claimed the U19 Oceania Championship road race title, after outsprinting two New Zealand rivals to the line.

Linfield edged out Christchurch rider Hamish Schreurs in a sprint finish to claim the under-19 title at the end of 102 kilometres of four laps of the Queenstown circuit.

The result is likely to see Lindfield compete in his second Junior World Road Championships campaign, with the 2012 event to be held in the Netherlands next September.

WAIS head cycling coach Darryl Benson praised Lindfield’s victory, claiming he had to work hard to overcome the New Zealand cyclists hometown advantage.

“Brad’s win was fantastic, in the final breakaway he had to fight off two New Zealand riders who were working together as a team,” Benson said.

2011 track Omnium World Champion and WAIS scholarship holder Michael Freiberg claimed two podium places in Queenstown, finishing second in the U23 road race and third in the road time trial. Trent Deracourt competed in the U19 road race and time trial, finishing both events in sixth position.

The Australian National Junior Track Championships were hosted in Melbourne last week, with WAIS scholarship holders Matt Jackson and Reece Tucknott members of the Western Australian U17 men’s team pursuit squad that claimed gold ahead of NSW. WAIS cycling coach Clay Worthington oversaw the WA group, which returned a large number of medals across the group.
