Robertson Overlooked for Beijing

WAIS tri-athlete and three time World Champion, Peter Robertson has missed out on selection for the 2008 Beijing Games, after Triathlon Australia today named Greg Bennett as the third men’s competitor.

Selection was always going to prove difficult for Robertson, after he suffered a severe gastro infection that sidelined the athlete for four months, seriously hampering his fitness and preparation.

Despite this, Robertson produced a fine performance last weekend finishing fourth in the Men’s World Cup event in Ishigaki, Japan.

TA chairman of selectors Peter Fitzgerald said the decision had not been made lightly after the squad was announced.

“As always in triathlon, because of Australia’s depth in the sport, the selection of athletes to be nominated to the Australian Olympic Committee was a difficult one,” Fitzgerald said.
