Dual World Champion Sam Welsford was named Australia’s Elite Male Track Cyclist of the Year at the Cycling Australia 2019 Cyclist of the Year Awards in Brisbane.

23-year-old Welsford had one of his most successful years in 2019 winning two world titles at the 2019 UCI Track World Championships in Poland in March.

Welsford combined to win his third team pursuit world title setting a new world record in the process before adding a second title less than an hour later in the scratch race.

“It’s been a ripper year. I never thought I’d be able to go dual world champion in one year, so I’m just really over the moon,” Welsford said after receiving the award. “I love coming to the Awards, it’s such a special night, to see Australia’s best come through to all celebrate the year we’ve had. I get really gee’d up when I see the year’s recap video, it makes you really forget about the Awards itself and makes you realise how special it is to ride for Australia.”
