Travis Meyer Competing in Italy

WAIS cyclist Travis Meyer has made a fine start to his European season with some encouraging results in the Belvedere and Recioto races in Italy.

Meyer has based himself in Castronno at the AIS training base, where he will stay for three months. His first race was in the Belvedere which is a 1.2 category elite race. Out of 185 riders, Meyer finished in a strong 29th position.

“I attacked the main front group which was going for about fifth spot with 1.5km to go-unfortunately I got caught with 500 meters to go but a sign that my form must be fairly good was that it took two out of four men from a team leading out their sprinter to bring me back, so for my debut race I was fairly pleased with my result,” said Meyer.

Meyer’s second race was the Recioto, an Under-23 Italian Classic that lasted 133km. Meyer finished 17th and was the only SA.com rider to complete the race.

Meyer’s next race is the Giro Ciclistica Lombarda. It is a six day tour in Italy which includes nine Pro Teams such as Tinkoff Credit Systems, Acqua Sapone and also the Rabobank Pro Continental team. This will be a very tough tour due to the competition, the terrain and the distance. This will be the longest tour Meyer has ever competed in.
