Two wins in a row move Matt Wearn in to the lead in Laser regatta

WAIS sailor Matt Wearn has rediscovered his best form to take a commanding lead in the category with two races to go before the final medal race.

After starting the regatta as a favourite, Wearn’s campaign got off to a challenging start finishing 17th and 28th in the first two races.

That all changed with Wearn not finishing lower than fourth in the next six races including winning both races on Thursday. This consistent sailing has seen Wearn, a four time world championship silver medallist rocket to the top of the standings on 29 points, 15 clear of his closest competition.

“I felt like I had underperformed earlier in the week, so it was nice to be able to go out and put together some performances like I would expect myself to do,” said Wearn.

“You’re never going to feel bad coming off the water after two wins. It was nice to unleash a bit of speed and great to have a couple of good starts which helped set up my races, but I know there’s still plenty of sailing left.”

Wearn returns to the water on Friday for the final two races before the medal race on the weekend.
