WA Cyclists Impress at Tour Down Under

Published On: 23 January 2017

Western Australian road cycling provided an exciting glimpse to the future at the Tour Down Under in South Australia, with three athletes earning representation in the top ten of the Best Young Rider standings.

Former U23 Road World Championship medallist Michael Storer enjoyed a stellar campaign with the UniSA-Australia team, finishing second in the Young Rider classification, whilst the squad enjoyed the Winning Team Award.

Storer’s West Australian teammate Jai Hindley was sixth in the U23 rankings, whilst WA’s Ben O’Connor eighth in the standings riding for Team Dimension Data.

The coveted ochre jersey for the general classification winner was claimed by Richie Porte (BMC Racing Team) whilst Storer’s efforts were reflected with a 15th overall ranking, with the North Perth resident 1:15min down on Porte’s winning time of 19:55.49hrs.

Hindley (25th) and O’Connor (32nd) boasted healthy overall representation, whilst WA cycling great Cameron Meyer rode with the UniSA-Australia team, providing vast experience and knowledge to the development pathway team.

Off the back of an impressive showing at the recent Australian Road Championships, Bassendean product Luke Durbridge provided a typically team focused ride with pro-team ORICA-SCOTT – who boasted second place GC rider Esteban Chaves.
