WA Duo Win National Junior Road Championships

WAIS cyclists Craig Wiggins and Jade Haines have come away with strong results from the 2015 Australian Junior Road Championships in Shepparton, Victoria.

Both athletes claimed victory in their respective U17 criterium events, whilst the pair also impressed in Saturday’s road races.

It was Sunday’s criteriums however, that the WA duo shone brightest, with Wiggins winning the boys’ U17 criterium and Haines claiming top step in the U17 girls’ event.

Wiggins, from Albany, won a bunch sprint to claim victory ahead of Tasmania’s Zack Gilmore and NSW’s Mitchell Wright.

Haines similarly produced an extra turn of speed when it was needed to nudge ahead of NSW’s pair, Natasha Mullany and Laura Jones in second and third respectively.

Wiggins had earlier earned himself silver in Saturday’s road race when he finished just shy of Victorian Godfrey Slattery, with Wright again in third.

Haines placed herself in the final bunch sprint in the girls’ road race but couldn’t crack through to the podium after finishing in fourth behind Morgan Gillon (TAS), Mullany and Queensland’s Courtney Patterson.

WAIS athlete Michael Storer departed for the USA this week as he readies to compete in the 2015 UCI Road Cycling World Championships in Richmond.

Storer will contest in the U19 ranks, having last year won a silver medal in the men’s time trial on debut.

The titles begin on the 19th of September, running through to the 27th with U19, U23 and senior events all held at the one championship.
