WA sailor Matthew Wearn is in strong medal contention at the 2017 Laser World Championships in Split, Croatia currently occupying second position overall.

After seven races, the top five includes three Australian competitors, with Wearn leading from reigning Olympic champion Tom Burton in third place and compatriot Mitchell Kennedy in fifth.

With weather conditions limiting Sunday’s racing to one completed event, Monday shapes as pivotal to the overall rankings, with three races scheduled for competition.

Wearn has posed a constant threat to leader Jean-Baptiste Bernaz of France, winning two of seven completed races, whilst earning second rank in a further two contests thus far. Barnaz for his part, has also recorded two race wins, whilst boasting three second place efforts. He holds top spot on 18 points, to Wearn’s 20.

Another Western Australian – in Luke Elliott – has also enjoyed some strong performances, currently occupying 16th position on 51 points.
