Wearn Leads European Laser Championships

Matt Wearn has taken the lead at the mid-way point of the European Laser Championships currently being held in La Rochelle, France.

The Australian Sailing Team member enjoyed a faultless third day to record two further race wins which sees the 22 year-old currently holding five race wins and discarded second place.

Fellow West Australian Luke Elliott is in eighth place overall and has been in good form over the opening days of competition.

Australian laser coach Michael Blackburn summed up a mixed day for his squad.

“We had two moderate wind races today,” Blackburn said.

“Wearny sailed well to another two wins. In a different fleet, in the first race, TB (Tom Burton) got caught up in a large pack of boats over the line and picked up his second black flag.

“He rallied and won the next race. He’ll be able to drop both BFDs after 10 races, but is under heavy pressure for the finals, which start tomorrow.”

Burton is currently ranked 37th.

Wearn’s strong form at the European Championships comes after his recent acknowledgement at the WA Sailing Awards which recognised him as the WA Male Sailor of the Year.

470 sailors Nia Jerwood and Monique de Vries shared the crown of WA Female Sailor of the Year, whilst Rome Featherstone scooped the WA Youth Sailor of the Year.
