Matt Wearn has continued his strong 2013 form with a State Championship win in the Laser

WAIS athlete and Australian Sailing Team member Matthew Wearn has won the 2014 Laser State Championship title at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

The state championship attracted an impressive fleet of full rig Lasers with over 40 boats competing, with Wearn joined in competition by fellow WAIS Australian team member Luke Elliot along with Ryan Palk from Queensland.

In strong racing conditions, Wearn claimed victory ahead of Palk, with another emerging WAIS athlete in Mark Spearman finishing third overall.

In the Laser Radial class, the newest members of the WAIS sailing program in Alistair Young and Conor Nicholas battled it out over three days of racing. The pair finished on equal points in second, with Young taking silver on countback, with the State title going to fellow WAIS athlete Tristan Brown, a dual World Champion in the Laser Radial class.

The State Championship roster continues this weekend with the 420 class taking to the pristine waters of the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. The 49er and 49er FX State Championships will be held the subsequent weekend.
