Wearn Wins Sail Sydney

Matt Wearn claimed victory in the laser class at the Sail Sydney regatta last weekend in the first domestic event for the new Australian summer season.

In his first competition since claiming the WAIS Athlete of the Year award for his outstanding 2018 campaign, Wearn delivered a consistent series of races against a small, but quality fleet.

He captured victory with a net points score of 12, which saw him edge the highly regarded New Zealand sailor, Sam Meech (18). Western Australian sailor Luke Elliott took fourth place on 33 points.

Nia Jerwood and Monique de Vries took gold in the women’s 470 class, recording nine points to secure the title in a small four boat fleet. They achieved five race wins to cement the competition win.

Working on the theory that two Gilmours are better than one, the sibling combination of David Gilmour and his younger brother Lachlan Gilmour, managed to claim a comprehensive victory in the men’s 49er ranks in Sydney.

The duo won eight races to dominate proceedings, finishing top on 14 points.

In the men’s 470 class, Chris Charlwood and Josh Dawson were second of the Australian crews and fourth overall in a nine boat fleet. A bullet in race four highlighted their series.

Caitlin Elks crewing for skipper Amelia Stabback finished in fourth place in the 49erFX, with victory going to Tess Lloyd and Jaime Ryan.
